George J. Hanlon

Night Officer George Hanlon was shot and killed by an escaped convict from Salem.

Several fisherman observed the man burglarizing a store at approximately 3:20 am and notified Officer Hanlon. Officer Hanlon encountered the man on Water Street but was immediately shot with a .44 caliber revolver.

The subject also shot and killed Sheriff John Shaver, of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Department, one week later as the sheriff attempted to arrest him. A civilian later shot and killed the convict.
