Marshal Hamm and Deputy Marshal James Jackson were shot and killed while attempting to collect fees owed by a carnival. The carnival was attempting to leave town without paying local merchants fees owed to them. Marshal Hamm deputized city councilman James Jackson and the two went in pursuit of the carnival. A gun battle ensued a short distance out of town and Marshal Hamm and Deputy Marshal Jackson were both killed.
