Sheriff Henry Halvorson was killed in an automobile crash while transporting a prisoner to the state penitentiary in Bismarck, North Dakota.
The crash occurred on U.S. Highway 10 near Tappen as he attempted to pass another car. His vehicle collided with another vehicle head-on.
Sheriff Halvorson had served as the sheriff of Grand Forks County for almost four years. He had previously served as an elected Grand Forks County constable for six years, police chief of the Larimore Polie Department for two years, and police chief of the Northwood Police Department for nine years. He was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
