Deputy Warden Gumm was shot and killed by an inmate who had obtained a gun that had been smuggled into the prison. The suspect, who also wounded a second guard, was convicted of Deputy Warden Gumm's murder and later executed.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 66th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
