I’d only been with the Department for four years when this happened. It was devastating because this happened to him while he was off duty and it happened in my neighborhood. I heard the shot but had no idea it would be my colleague who’d been shot while acting as a “Good Samaritan”. To this day I remember Bruce Mayo and he will always be remembered. My heart and prayers still go out to his family even after all these years.
