Patrolman George Giovannoni was shot and killed when he came upon a man shooting at two officers at the intersection of 49th Street and Federal Street.

A woman had just sworn out a warrant against a man whom she stated had tried to kill her. Moments after leaving the police station the man began chasing her with a gun and bystanders called for help. When the two officers arrived they exchanged shots with the man, who started to flee on foot.

Patrolman Giovannoni, who was off duty and shopping in the area, immediately drew his gun and chased the man into the backyard of 4821 S Federal Street. The two exchanged shots at close range and both were fatally wounded.

Patrolman Giovannoni was survived by his wife.
