This was my hero. My idol. My best friend. Oh, and my dad. Hard to believe it's been almost 39 years since he left. For me it's always kind of felt like yesterday. In the months before his death we would play games every night. Stratego and chess for money. It was during these games he taught me his wisdom. Logical thinking and strategy. We were in the middle of a stratego game when he was called away that night. The game remained there for two weeks after he had gone. I kept thinking it was a dream and he would be back to finish. He probably let me win most of the time but he did tell my mother to pay me the 20+dollars he owed me before he died. The night he died was like yesterday to me. I was awakened that night. I sat up in bed and looked around and listened. All was calm and quiet. Wasn't sure what had awakened me. After a few minutes I laid back to sleep. A short time later I awakened to the phone ringing down stairs. I sat straight up ,knowing what the call was, and waited for my mom to answer. Her cries told me what i already knew but I also knew what had awakened me a short time earlier-his spirit telling me goodbye. I love you and will always remember you as my hero, my idol, my friend, MY DAD!
