The story passed down to me was that Sam Middleton was drunk and my Uncle Ed was trying to take him home to keep from arresting him. He didn’t realize he had a gun on him. Sam shot him twice in the head and killed him. My dad, Ed’s brother, Harley was his deputy but he also worked in the coal mine. He was at work that day. When he came home and found out what had happened, he went after Sam Middleton chasing him through the middle of Evarts. He shot at him and grazed him in the back but couldn’t pursue him further because school kids were in the way. Sam was found guilty but only got sentenced to 8 years.
