Patrolman August Dickman was shot and killed after being alerted to a disturbance.

Five men had surrounded a suspect who was waving a pistol in the air. The suspect fired into the air twice and then began to run away. He suddenly swung around a telephone pole and fired again, striking Patrolman Dickman in the chest.

Patrolman Dickman had served with the Kankakee Police Department for only six months.
