Patrolman Gene DeBerry succumbed to injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash when he attempted to overtake a speeding vehicle near the Memorial Boulevard Overpass and Omohundro in 1966.

The accident left him permanently paralyzed. He succumbed to his injuries in 1985.

Patrolman DeBerry had served with the Lakeland Police Department for 22 years. He was survived by his wife, son, mother, two brothers, and a sister.
