Officers Richard Posey and William Davis were shot and killed after being ambushed in the police department's parking lot.

Both officers were shot in the back. A 28 year-old man was arrested at his home the next day and charged with their murders. The victim officers had charged him with driving with a revoked license two months earlier.

The suspect was convicted of two counts of first degree murder and sentenced to two life terms on March 25, 1974.

Officer Davis had served with the Kennett Square Police Department for two years.

Here 48 years later, I remember the news that two officers were slain in Kennett Square. At 15 years old, a hunter of pheasant and rabbits, but to shoot a kindly Kennett Square Police Officer. It did not make sense at all.
I honored the Officers then as I do now, in a world that makes even less sense than that crime did then. I believe that you keep watch today as part of the 'sixth sense' that all professional law enforcement needs to meet the ever changing needs of those they protect.
