William L. Daniels

Corporal William Daniels was shot and killed at a bar at 8th and Christian Street while off duty by one of four men during an armed robbery. When one of the robbers took his wallet and saw his police I D he shot and killed him. All four, 19, 20, 20, and 21, were apprehended.

Three suspects were convicted of murder and sentenced to life. The killer was sentenced to death. In 1977 after the supreme court ruled the death penalty unconstitutional his sentence was commuted to life.

Corporal Daniels was survived by his wife and three girls.
