Officer John Holmes succumbed to a gunshot wound he suffered on March 28, 1975, by a sniper.

Officer William Wurst, of the Hainesport Police Department, and Patrolman Donald Aleshire, also of the Mount Holly Police Department, were also killed by the sniper. Officer Holmes had been paralyzed since the incident.

Officer Holmes was survived by his wife and son.

I remember with vivid recollection of that tragic day. I was still a radiology student that day, graduating in a few weeks. Mostly I remember your son coming and asking for his dad...I had gone to high school with him and he was a good friend then, actually to everyone as he was one of the nicest kid in school. I was so young a nd had never imagine something like this could have happened in my little town. I think often of Officer Holmes’ family and always of the man himself who was so courageous that day.
