Deputy Cosby was shot and killed while transporting a prisoner from the jail. The prisoner attempted to flee and during the ensuing struggle the man gained control of Deputy Cosby's weapon and shot him.

The suspect was convicted and sentenced to three life sentences.

Deputy Cosby was survived by his wife and two daughters.
