Zone Sergeant David Cobine suffered a fatal heart attack while driving on the New York State Thruway near Syracuse.

His patrol vehicle crossed all four lanes, traveling over 700 feet, before stopping in the grass on the side of the Thruway. He did not collide with any vehicles. Three days prior to his heart attack, he was part of the search and capture efforts of four felons who escaped from a Department of Corrections bus. They were apprehended after a car and foot pursuit.

Zone Sergeant Cobine had been with the New York State Police for 21 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.
