I met Layne on a case where my neighbor had been burgled. I was impressed with his fingerprinting such a routine case, and his attention to detail. I told him I my interest in police work and he encouraged me.

Later as a young Deputy, while still in the academy, I ran afowl of hard financial times and didn't know how I would make the daily commute to NCGLETC. Layne had plenty of bills himself, but told me he could loan me some money to buy an old car! I turned down his kind offer, but the magnanimous nature of it reaffirmed my desire to complete the academy! I don't think that I would have without his encouragement. I would come to spent 29 years in the profession.

He was a kind man, a funny guy, and a great cop. I will always miss him!
