Officer Connolly was shot and killed while questioning two suspicious persons outside a hotel.
A month later the suspects shot and seriously wounded the Lincoln County Sheriff when he attempted to arrest them in Eureka. The sheriff managed to return fire wounding one suspect. Two days later the suspects were apprehended in Flathead County.
One 26-year-old suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison. He was released in 1931.
Officer Connolly had served with the Great Falls Police Department for 11 years. He was survived by his wife and two children.
