Edward Newton Campbell

Sheriff Edward Campbell was shot and killed while on a stake-out with a local city marshal. The two officers where in a vacant home when they surprised two burglars. Sheriff Campbell yelled to the men to raise their hands but was shot in the chest. The two were apprehended and taken to the local jail. Later in the night a mob of masked men forcibly removed the men and lynched them both.

Sheriff Campbell was originally from Ohio and was a veteran of the Civil War.

Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just as a Law Enforcement Officer but for our Country as well when you served with the Union Army as a member of the 32nd Ohio Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.
