Detective First Grade Nick Holovinsky died as the result of cancer that he developed following his assignment to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.
Detective Holovinsky had served with the New York City Police Department for 29 years. He is survived by his wife, daughter, sister, and grandson.
The 9/11 Terrorist Attacks
On the morning of September 11th, 2001, seventy-two officers from a total of eight local, state, and federal agencies were killed when terrorist hijackers working for the al Qaeda terrorist network, headed by Osama bin Laden, crashed four hijacked planes into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
After the impact of the first plane into the World Trade Center's North Tower, putting the safety of others before their own, law enforcement officers along with fire and EMS personnel, rushed to the burning Twin Towers of the World Trade Center to aid the victims and lead them to safety. Due to their quick actions, it is estimated that over 25,000 people were saved.
As the evacuation continued, the South Tower unexpectedly collapsed as a result of the intense fire caused by the impact. The North Tower collapsed a short time later. Seventy-two law enforcement officers, 343 members of the New York City Fire Department, and over 2,800 civilians were killed at the World Trade Center site on 9/11.
A third hijacked plane crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania when the passengers attempted to re-take control of the plane. One law enforcement officer, who was a passenger on the plane, was killed in that crash.
The fourth hijacked plane was crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, killing almost 200 military and civilian personnel. No law enforcement officers were killed at the Pentagon on 9/11.
The terrorist attacks resulted in the declaration of war against the Taliban regime, the illegal rulers of Afghanistan, and the al Qaeda terrorist network which also was based in Afghanistan.
On September 9th, 2005, all of the public safety officers killed on September 11th, 2001, were posthumously awarded the 9/11 Heroes Medal of Valor by President George W. Bush.
The contamination in the air at the World Trade Center site caused many rescue personnel to become extremely ill and eventually led to the death of several rescue workers.
On May 1st, 2011, members of the United States military conducted a raid on a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and killed Osama bin Laden.

View all 3 ReflectionsOn January 1st 1983 I first met Nicky. I was returning home early in the morning after working the New Years Eve detail in Manhattan. We had been held over due to the terrorist bombs at Police Headquarters.
I was walking through the transit underpass connecting the Atlantic Avenue IRT to the Pacific St BMT. Two young men came running past me from behind and further back I saw a uniformed transit officer who apparently was chasing them.
I was in civilian attire and chased after the two men. One ran through a gate and I continued to chase the other male who ran out the Pacific st turnstiles. As I was jumping over the turnstile two men came up from the B train platform one continued to chase after the male this was Nicky. His partner Joe had his weapon pointed at me as I was blurting out I was a cop. He yelled go with my partner. I continued onto the street and Nicky and I caught the male in an empty lot near Dean st. Nicky and Joe were also returning back to the 66 pct from the same detail. Thankfully the transit cop caught up with us and took the collar for a chain snatch robbery.
At the time I was assigned to NSU 12. Much to my surprise I was assigned to the 66 pct in June 1983 where Nicky and Joe worked the late tour burglary car. Nicky and Joe were were happy to welcome me and share the story with the command of how this was the rookie that they almost on a New Years Eve.
When I first found out I was assigned to the 66pct I stopped by the precinct after working a 4x12 at NSU 12. After parking I walked to the precinct a "vicious" dog approached me barking and howling and I jumped onto a parked car to avoid the dog hoping I wouldn't have to shoot the dog. After a minute the dog sauntered away. Well this "vicious" dog was Gertie the precinct mascot who would always bark at anyone she didn't know.
I was assured by Nicky and quite a few of the other veterans that if I had hurt Gertie I myself would probably have been thrown over the wall onto the old freight tracks that was just across the street from the precinct if not worse.
Rest in peace Nicky
