Sergeant Alex Hamzy and Lieutenant Dustin DeMonte were shot and killed in an ambush in front of a home on Redstone Hill Road, near Birch Street, at about 11:00 p.m.
Officers had responded to a business earlier in the evening in response to complaints about a disorderly patron. Officers who responded to the call issued the man an infraction and released him. The man then went home, armed himself with an AR-15 rifle, and made a fake 911 call reporting a disturbance at his home. As officers arrived at the scene, the man opened fire on them from the front yard.
Sergeant Hamzy and Lieutenant DeMonte were both fatally wounded, while a third officer suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
The subject was shot and killed by the third officer.
Sergeant Hamzy had served with the Bristol Police Department for eight years. He is survived by his wife, parents, and two sisters.
Sergeant Hamzy was posthumously promoted to Sergeant.

For one, that man was a gutless individual and a coward to ambush you and your partner, all because of the fact he wasn't in the right state of mind. i'm not sure what drove him to ambush and murder 2 police officers that day, but only god knows. Other than that he's a piece of garbage and always will be, because he took away one of the good officers in the state of connecticut, as you were one of the officers who enjoyed what they did and did their job with a passion, because you had it in you to be an officer with courage. Also, you and Demonte did get avenged in death, because the third officer who was in your group shot and killed that worthless piece of garbage, as he should have, because he should've been put down a long time ago. Thankfully, he won't hurt anyone else or another officer again, because he is receiving his punishment in the afterlife for his actions, as his judgement day has come for him, and karma got its last word on him. But as i said before, i can tell you were a good man to be around, because you were the type of person to live life to the fullest, and to serve and protect his people with honor and integrity. I'm sure the state of connecticut and the people of bristol appreciated your service while you were alive, because more than likely alot of people within your area knew who you were and what kindof person you were, along with everybody you ran into while on the job. But as of now, may you rest in peace knowing your service is appreciated, and that the man who took your life is also gone, as you've been avenged in death. Rest Well Mr. Hamzy
