Sergeant Michael Paredes and Police Officer Joseph Santana were shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call at the Siesta Inn at 10327 Garvey Avenue in El Monte.
At 4:45 pm, Sergeant Paredes and Officer Santana responded to a report of a possible stabbing between a boyfriend and girlfriend and that a female was being held against her will. The subject took his own life when he fell to the ground.
Both officers were taken to the L.A. County USC Medical Center, where they succumbed to their wounds.
The suspect was a convicted felon on probation and had been arrested for being a felon in possession of a gun.

View all 89 ReflectionsI attended your funeral where I was motivated by the deliverance of your daughter’s speech. She captivated the audience with her vehement speech that pierced the hearts of every peace officer present. It was through her speech that I and every one in attendance knew the you were embodiment of a what it was to be peace officer and a loving father. Thought I should let you know you did a great job at raising a resilient young woman with a bright future.
