Lieutenant Garry Duplessis died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 while working at the Orleans Justice Center's Main Jail at 2800 Perdido Street in New Orleans.

Lieutenant Duplessis had served with the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office for 28 years and was the commander of the Central Control Unit at the Orleans Justice Center at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, mother, two sisters, and brother.

Beginning in early 2020, due to the requirements of their job, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the United States contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic. Hundreds of law enforcement officers died from medical complications as a result of contracting the virus while remaining on duty and interacting with the community.
