Norris R. Scarbrough

Deputy Sheriff Norris Scarbrough was shot and killed by a man whom he had arrested several times over the previous 18 months.

Both men lived near Douglas on Sand Mountain and inadvertently met at a filling station near their homes. The men exchanged words before the subject drew a pistol and shot Deputy Scarbrough several times.

The man, age 30, who claimed self defense, was arrested and charged with murder. On December 26, 1928 he was found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to 15 years. In January of 1931 he was granted a retrial, convicted of manslaughter, and sentenced to 7 years.

Deputy Scarbrough had served with the Marshall County Sheriff's Office for two years. He was survived by his wife and several children.
