Deputy Sheriff Chris Smith died after contracting COVID-19 during a confirmed exposure at the McLennan County Tax Office at 215 North 5th Street in Waco.
Deputy Smith was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He had served with the McLennan County Sheriff's Office for two years and had previously served with the Waco Police Department for 28 years. He is survived by his wife and child.
In early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19.
