Night Policeman Edgar Martin died after a .45 caliber handgun he was carrying in his waistband accidentally discharged.
He was carrying the handgun in his belt as a second weapon from his duty revolver. The gun discharged as he walked along the sidewalk on Highway 74 (modern-day NC Highway 711), a quarter-mile west of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad tracks. The shot severed an artery, causing him to bleed to death.
Policeman Martin had served with the Pembroke Police Department for 10 years. He was survived by his wife.
