Israel Shepard Hughes

Special Deputy Sheriff Israel Hughes was shot and killed from ambush while returning from a still in a swamp area near Altoona.

He was ambushed as he was walking to his vehicle that he had parked a short distance away. He had just collected evidence and marked the location of the still to report it to the sheriff. Bloodhounds had traced the suspect's scent for three miles until they ran into a hornet's nest. His son, who had accompanied him, was the only witness to the shooting.

It is unknown if any arrests or convictions were ever made.

Special Deputy Sheriff Hughes was survived by his wife, and two children.

This is my Great Grandfather that gave his life & was ambushed with my great Uncle Edward his son as a witness that died some years later & was put on trial for a crime that he didn’t commit & was somehow shot & murdered. The truth I pray to God will one day be revealed by our Lord & creator. I never got to meet him but the pain of this incident caused much sadness & loss of what could of been a great man to our family! May the Lord God almighty bring justice for us all even back in 1925 when he died! His loving Great granddaughter Darlene Louise Wilson! God is great & never quit believing he will reveal justice for all our families.
