Police Officer Nicholas Reyna and Lieutenant Eric Hill, of the Lubbock Fire Department, were struck and killed by a vehicle while at the scene of a previous crash on I-27 near Drew Street.

Officers and rescue personnel were at the scene of an earlier single-vehicle rollover crash on the interstate when a second vehicle also crossed the median. As officers then dealt with the second crash a third vehicle left the travel lanes and struck Officer Reyna, Lieutenant Hill, and a second firefighter. Officer Reyna and Lieutenant Hill both suffered fatal injuries and the second firefighter was critically injured.

Officer Reyna had served with the Lubbock Police Department for one year.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Nicholas was killed in the line of duty.

To the Reyna family, fellow officers, and all who call Nicholas beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support. I know that that you will receive that same kind of support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace/

I also send my sincerest condolences to the family of the other dedicated public servant who lost his life, Lt. Hill, and prayers for the recovery of the other injured firefighter.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Reyna gave to his community and the citizens of Texas and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on January 11, 2020.
