Town Marshal Hubert Jones succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained three days earlier while attempting to serve a warrant. He located the subject in a vehicle with two other men. As he approached the vehicle the subject shot him in the abdomen. All of the men in the car fled the scene. Marshal Jones was taken to Baptist Hospital where he died on July 20th, 1926.
One of the men in the car was shot and killed the next day by Holmes County officers. Another, arrested and jailed the same day was shot and killed by person(s) unknown that night in the county jail. Marshal Jones murderer was convicted of murder and hanged on July 8, 1927.
Marshal Jones also served as a deputy with the Holmes County Sheriff's Department.
