Town Marshal Hubert Jones succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained three days earlier while attempting to serve a warrant.
He located the subject in a vehicle with several other men. As he approached the vehicle the subject shot him in the abdomen. All of the men in the car fled the scene.
Marshal Jones was taken to Baptist Hospital where he died on July 20th, 1926.
Three of the four men in the vehicle were killed prior to being tried. The fourth man was convicted of Marshal Jones' murder and sentenced to death.
Marshal Jones also served as a deputy with the Holmes County Sheriff's Department.
