Charles Marrion Bruce was my grandfather. I have been to his grave in McPherson and I have tried to learn as much about him as I could but I never got to meet and know this man who I share DNA with. That opportunity was taken from me by those who took his life.

I was told that he had responded a week earlier to a similar call and had drawn his side arm and nearly fired at a group of college kids stealing gasoline. The night of his death he stepped out of his vehicle and never drew his weapon, leaving my grandmother without a husband, my dad, Dale and Charles’ other two sons Keith and Blaine and daughter Alpha-Lee without a father.

While I have always had this tremendous pride at my grandfather’s sacrifice, I’m sure I would much rather have had the chance to know this brave man.
