View all 83 ReflectionsI went to the Orange County Sheriff's Academy with Oscar Reyes in 2005. He was a super nice guy. During my time at the academy, a lot of people were hired who were former military when I was in the academy in 2005. However, I believe Oscar told me he was transitioning from being a grocery store manager into law enforcement. In fact, I was looking forward to being friends with him during my work with CMPD because he was a friendly and genuinely kind guy.
I ended up not staying in a career of law enforcement due to the stressful nature of the job, I sold my back up revolver to Oscar, and I lost touch with him. It was pretty shocking to hear the news of his passing so young.
There are good-hearted people who you come across in life that make your work day easier and life more enjoyable. Oscar was one of those good-hearted guys, and my prayers are with his family.
One last story. I remember talking with Oscar a handful of years after I quit. I remember telling him about a couple motor officers at CMPD who made a lot of DUI arrests and won some awards. I remember he told me, "I would love to make that many arrests, but you have to work a lot of overtime to make all of those arrests, but I would rather go home because I want to spend time with my family."
He was a solid family man, too.
