Deputy Sheriff Marion Layne was shot and killed while investigating a previous shooting on the highway between Garrett and Lackey, Kentucky.
He was searching a subject when he was shot twice in the chest and once in the back by two other juveniles. Despite his wounds, he was able to drive himself approximately one-quarter mile into Garrett where he identified the two boys who shot him.
Both boys were arrested and charged with murder but subsequently acquitted.
Deputy Layne was survived by his wife, two daughters, parents, and siblings. He was buried in Turner Cemetery in Knott County, Kentucky.
