Charlie William Monroe Gaines

Deputy Sheriff Charlie Gaines was shot and killed while attempting to serve a warrant on a man for stealing chickens.

He and another deputy located the man at his home near Henning. The subject opened fire on Deputy Gaines with a shotgun, striking him in the abdomen, before fleeing. Several bloodhounds tracked him for several hours before losing his scent near Pleasant Hill.

Deputy Gaines was taken to the Veteran Administration Hospital in Memphis where he succumbed to his wounds the following day.

Deputy Gaines was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of WWI. He was survived by his wife, daughter, three sons, and mother.
