Ben was my mother’s uncle. He had triumphed in at least two previous gunfights. This time he was fatally shot during a coal mine strike by a striking miner who was also killed in the shootout. Ben was mortally wounded by the first shot but returned fire, wounding his attacker. A local citizen confronted the fleeing striker and was also killed. Other citizens chased down and killed the shooter. National newspapers reported 50-70 shots fired during the shootout.

Thanks to all of you who place yourselves in harm’s way every day for the rest of us. You have my enduring respect and admiration.
