Constable S.D. Diedrick succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained four days earlier after giving a warning to a group of men who were gambling.
One of the subjects opened fire on him. Despite being mortally wounded, Constable Diedrick returned fire and killed the subject.
Constable Diedrick was survived by his wife and three children. He is buried at Ullin Cemetery in Ullin, Illinois.
