Deputy Irving Burkett was a stellar employee and his respect for female leaders. I worked at Rocky Butte Jail from 1970 until 1973 as a deputy. In 1982 on Sunday, July 25th, I was the Lieutenant Commander on call for the weekend for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Corrections Unit, I received a call informing me that a jail break had occurred and a deputy was injured. I arrived to the facility within twenty minutes and was informed that the injured deputy was Irving Burkett. Unbelievable, he was one of the best employee I had ever supervised.
During the years after Deputy Burkett's injured, he lost his eyesight but he knew my voice and he would respond with admiration by saying "that is Lieutenant Pool"
After 38 years since this tragedy occurred, Deputy Burkett is missed , his dedication and memories shall always be in my heart.
