Sergeant Michael Bossuyt was shot and killed after he stopped two men who were stealing a video game console from an arcade at the intersection of East Forest Avenue and Gratiot Avenue.

The subjects were able to gain control of his service weapon and shot him in the head. They then stole the gun and threw it into Lake St. Clair, where it was later recovered. The suspect was sentenced to life in prison.

Sergeant Bossuyt had been with the Detroit Police Department for 12 years. He was survived by his wife, son, daughter, father, and three sisters.

March 8,1983. I walked into that arcade responding to a possible officer down call. When I stepped through the door of that arcade my heart sunk. I remember picking up the prep radio, the old one that we used to call the brick. I can still hear myself shouting "Officer down!"
Other than a couple of beers shared at Mikes Good Year Bar I never had the opportunity to know him. He was a good boss, Tough but fair, demanding but always up front leading. Only the best.
