Sergeant Richard Nash was shot and killed by a probationary patrolman who was attempting to show off in front of two friends. The three men were driving between bars when Sergeant Nash, who had just gotten off duty, cut in front of their car while driving home.
The three, not knowing Sergeant Nash was a police officer, then followed him into an alley behind his home at 2811 N Robey Street (modern-day N Damen Avenue) and started to argue with him. When one of the men told Sergeant Nash to put his arms up a shootout ensued in which Sergeant Nash was shot. Despite being mortally wounded, he was able to return fire and shot all three men, one of them fatally.
Both of the suspects who survived were charged with murder, but subsequently acquitted. The probationary policeman was fired from the force.
Sergeant Nash had served with the Chicago Police Department for 12 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.
