Deputy Sheriff Webb Edwards was shot and killed by a man he was attempting to arrest on a warrant.
The suspect was apprehended several days later.
The suspect was found guilty of first-degree murder in Saluda County and sentenced to death. In March 1923 he was awarded a new trial in Edgefield County where he was again convicted of first-degree murder but was sentenced to life.
Deputy Edwards had served with the Saluda County Sheriff's Office for 12 years. He was survived by his wife and six children.
