Deputy Sheriff Leroy Matthews was killed when his patrol car collided with a minivan as he patrolled Highway 95 in the area of Tamarack, Idaho. His patrol car crossed the center line and struck the minivan head-on.

Deputy Matthews had served with the Adams County Sheriff's Department for five years and had previously served with the Grangeville Police Department.

Leroy, my precious son. God gave me you for 35 years. I knew when you were born you would be so special to this world. In the short time you were here you made such a difference. Adams County loved you. You were fair, honest, and cared for everyone. Life is so different since you left me. So much has happened. You watch out for all of us and always will. I love you sweet boy.
