Crockett M. "Jack" Riddell

Deputy Sheriff Jack Riddell was shot and killed while questioning four men who were loitering at the corner of 12th Street and Zane Street.

As Deputy Riddell searched the men for weapons one of them shot him in the head with a 12-gauge shotgun from a distance of 15 feet.

All four men fled the scene. One of the men was shot and killed by a Louisville police officer later in the year. The other three were charged with murder the following year.

Deputy Riddell was survived by his wife and 3-year-old daughter.
