Sherman Russell

Deputy Marshal Sherman Russell was assassinated in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Hard feelings existed between a man and Marshal Russell's family. He was shot and killed by a man he hired to kill him. The killer escaped. The man who hired him was charged with murder.

On November 28, 1896, in a Arkansas Federal Court, the man who hired the killer was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. On June 24, 1903, he was pardoned by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Deputy Marshal Russell was survived by his wife.
