Sergeant Bock was shot and killed after attempting to arrest a suspect he had just chased. The suspect was able to disarm Sergeant Bock and shot him four times. The man then shot at a passing truck before shooting Sergeant Bock two more times.

The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended and sentenced to death. On June 12, 2004, the suspect was found to be mentally ill and his sentence was commuted to life with the possibility of parole.

Sergeant Bock had been with the agency for 13 years. He was survived by his two daughters, mother, and two sisters.

Mr Bock,you were our neighborhood hero.i grew up on Cain and Braeswood and you lived at the corner of Braeswood and Holly.my sisters and I grew up with your daughters Dana and dannette hanging out swimming all the time.I remember you rushed me to the emergency room when I got hit by a baseball in my mouth and got me stitches lol you made me feel better about it,took the fear out of me.I remember I was in 6th grade when they pulled us out of school to tell us what happened.I'll never forget that day,I'll never forget you...you were our hero like I said
