George H. Loney

Deputy Sheriff George Loney was shot and killed in Okema by a 14-year-old boy as he searched his parent's shanty for stolen goods.

The boy, his father, and mother were arrested and confined in the Okfuskee County Jail. Two weeks later a mob broke into the jail, gagged and bound the jailer, and seized the boy and his mother. They were hanged from the timbers of a bridge across the Canadian River. The boy's father was convicted of larceny and sent to prison before they were lynched. He served three years.

Deputy Loney was survived by his wife and three children. He is buried west of Paden, Lincoln County, Oklahoma.
