Gus Johnson

Deputy Constable Gus Johnson was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man who had been firing his gun in the road. The suspect was accompanied by several other men who had also been shooting.

Deputy Johnson requested help from two Wheelwright police officers before approaching the men. The officers arrested the man's companions, but the man fled into a nearby garage.

As Deputy Johnson shined his light into the garage the man opened fire, mortally wounding Deputy Johnson. Despite the wound, he was able to return fire and killed the suspect.

Deputy Johnson succumbed to his wounds while being transported to a hospital in Pikeville, Kentucky.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 76th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.
