Officer Nancy Nichols was killed when she was struck by a car after stopping to help a fellow officer.

The first female officer hired by the Naugatuck Police Department, Officer Nichols was also the first female officer in Connecticut to die in the line of duty. Officer Nichols is survived by her son.

You have always been in my thoughts. I was a 16 year old waiting at church down the road for my mother that Sunday morning . She, an RN, arrived late after trying to help you at the scene, sad and silent, your blood on her skirt. When I lived there I thought of you always as I passed the cross roadside. Today, as a female cop for 21 years, you, your son and family, are in my thoughts often, dedicate my continued service to you, and ask you to keep watch over all of us here serving. God bless,
