Deputy Sheriff Blackman was shot and killed while investigating a stabbing with another deputy. The two deputies located the suspect at his home and informed him he would have to accompany them to the police station.

The 43-year-old ex-convict was permitted to get his coat, but he returned to the door with a shotgun and fatally shot Deputy Blackman. The other deputy shot and killed the suspect.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 79th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
