Patrolman Burtis Birkhoff was killed in an automobile collision while pursuing a youth who was fleeing on foot.

Patrolman Birkhoff had commandeered a car and was riding on the running board. The driver of the car stopped suddenly to avoid hitting the suspect and Patrolman Birkhoff was thrown to the ground.

Patrolman Birkhoff had served with the Passaic Police Department for 10 years and was survived by his wife and three young children.

Please forgive my typo in my previous reflection. On today the 83rd anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Passaic. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
