Policeman C.H. Jones was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man for disturbing the peace. After shooting Policeman Jones, the suspect fled to a nearby mine where he remained holed up for three days.

The suspect was finally taken into custody and charged with Policeman Jones' murder. He was convicted of the murder and sentenced to death. He was able to escape from the Tazewell County Jail, but was arrested in Kentucky several days later. After being taken back into custody he was transported to the jail in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he remained until his execution date. He was returned to Tazewell County and executed by hanging on September 9, 1892.
