J. W. Thompson

Marshal J.W. Thompson was fatally wounded as he attempted to break up a fight between two men.

The previous Saturday, the two men had gotten into a quarrel over a business matter and exchanged words. Friends of the two men had kept the fight from escalating that night, but the following Monday, the two met up in the street. When one of the men demanded an apology, the other drew his pistol. The two men began struggling over the weapon.

Upon seeing this, Marshal Thompson rushed over and attempted to disarm the suspect who had drawn the weapon. However, the suspect fired at the other man, and the bullet passed through the man's side and struck Marhal Thompson in the chest, killing him instantly. The other man was also fatally wounded.

The suspect, whom Marshal Thompson had managed to injure in the struggle, was unable to flee and was apprehended.

Marshal Thompson was survived by his wife and a large family.
