Deputy Sheriff S.D. Sheldon succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained six days earlier.

He was shot in the head while collecting the license tax from a saloon in Toano, Nevada.

Deputy Sheldon also served as the Constable for Toano Township.

Toano, also referred to as Toana, became a ghost town in 1906 after traffic from Idaho and the south ceased with the completion of the Oregon Shortline Railroad.
